Louisville Shooting Arrest: Preston Culpepper Charged After September 20 Non-Fatal Shooting on Dixie Highway
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) detectives have arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with a non-fatal shooting that occurred last month in Louisville’s Second Division.
The shooting happened on September 20, 2026, in the 1600 block of Dixie Highway near JJ’s Food Mart, according to the LMPD Non-Fatal Shooting Unit.
Following the incident, detectives continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and worked to identify the person believed to be responsible.
Suspect Arrested After Investigation
LMPD said detectives with the department’s Violent Crime Unit (VCU) located and arrested 43-year-old Preston Culpepper late Tuesday afternoon, October 6, 2026.
Culpepper was taken into custody in connection with the September 20 shooting.
According to police, detectives obtained charges against him for:
One count of Assault in the First Degree
One count of Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon
The charges stem from the investigation into the shooting near Dixie Highway and JJ’s Food Mart.
Additional Warrants Served
During Culpepper’s arrest, officers also served additional outstanding arrest warrants against him.
Police emphasized that those warrants were unrelated to the September 20 shooting investigation.
Authorities did not provide additional details about the separate warrants in the information released.
No Further Arrests Expected
LMPD said that no additional arrests are expected in connection with this particular shooting investigation.
The department did not release additional information about the victim’s identity, the victim’s current medical condition, or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Police also have not publicly disclosed a possible motive or provided a detailed account of what investigators believe happened in the moments leading up to the gunfire.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The arrest represents a significant development in the investigation, which began after the September 20 non-fatal shooting.
Culpepper now faces serious criminal allegations, including an assault charge and a firearms charge based on his status as a convicted felon.
An arrest and criminal charge are not a conviction. Culpepper is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The case is expected to proceed through the criminal justice system, where prosecutors and the defense will have an opportunity to present evidence concerning the allegations.
LMPD’s Non-Fatal Shooting Unit and Violent Crime Unit were involved in the investigation leading to the arrest.
This is a developing story. Additional information may be released as the case moves forward.
