Fatal Collision on Old Hammond Highway
Officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department and emergency medical service personnel were dispatched at approximately 2:19 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, following emergency calls reporting a severe crash in the 10000 block of Old Hammond Highway. According to official police reports, Jacob Brown, 29, was operating a eastbound 2000 Honda dirt bike when a westbound 2018 Jeep Wrangler executed an improper U-turn directly into his lane of travel. Brown’s dirt bike collided with the rear passenger side of the Jeep before veering off the roadway. Emergency medical crews evaluated Brown at the scene, where he succumbed to fatal injuries sustained in the impact.
Police Investigation and Impaired Driving Charges
Traffic homicide detectives with the Baton Rouge Police Department conducted on-scene evaluations and administered field sobriety tests to the driver of the Jeep, identified as Merari Besai Romero Mejia. Officers reported that Mejia performed poorly on field sobriety tests and subsequently submitted a chemical breath test more than two hours post-collision yielding a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.089%. Following medical evaluation and a mandatory blood draw at a local hospital, Mejia was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. She faces criminal charges including vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle while impaired (OWI), reckless operation of a vehicle, and illegal turning at an intersection. The police investigation into the crash remains active.
