Born on October 16, 1991, Ian grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Wilmore, Kentucky. From an early age, he dreamed of becoming a United States Navy SEAL, pursuing that ambition with determination and discipline.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2012, completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training (BUD/S) Class 301, and went on to serve with SEAL Team 8. During his military service, he completed multiple deployments to Central America and East Africa as part of the Global War on Terrorism. He concluded his naval service in 2018 as a Special Warfare Operator Second Class.

A Life Defined by Service and Creativity
Although Ian’s military career was a significant part of his life, his story extended far beyond his service in uniform. His family remembered him as an artist, adventurer, and compassionate individual who found meaning in creativity and human connection.

Following his military service, Ian pursued his passion for the arts at the University of Kentucky, where he studied fine arts. He became a gifted sculptor, metalworker, poet, and musician who enjoyed singing and playing guitar and drums.

Music was among the many ways he connected with people. Spontaneous jam sessions with family and friends brought him happiness, and he encouraged others to join in, express themselves, and share their creativity.

An Adventurer Who Embraced Life
Ian had a deep appreciation for adventure and new experiences. He traveled widely, surfed, skateboarded, kayaked, and spent time living in the western United States. He also climbed mountains and traveled through Europe while working on tour with Metallica.

These experiences reflected his curiosity and willingness to explore the world around him. Whether through travel, art, music, or outdoor adventures, Ian pursued the things that inspired him and created lasting memories with the people he encountered.

Remembering His Compassion for Others
One of the most meaningful parts of Ian’s legacy was his commitment to helping people facing difficult circumstances.

Having witnessed the struggles experienced by many veterans, he became an advocate for those navigating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges. He believed in helping people find hope, support, and healing.

His compassion also extended to residents of Rose Terrace Personal Care Home in Nicholasville, where he spent time connecting with people living with mental illness. He volunteered at animal shelters and adored his three dogs. He also volunteered in Boston, teaching rock climbing to children living with cancer.

Through these efforts, Ian demonstrated that service could continue long after military duty ended. His family and friends will remember not only what he accomplished but also the care he showed to others.

A Beloved Husband, Son, and Brother
Ian was a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, grandson, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his father and stepmother, Tim and Sybil Brandewie; his mother and stepfather, Jennifer Holland and Steven Mazzoni; and his sister and brother-in-law, Caitlin and Thomas Zagajowski Jr.

He also leaves behind his nieces, Faith and Mary Grace Grose; his nephew, Thomas Zagajowski III; his grandfather, Richard Clem; his grandparents, Raymond and Lauren Tompkins; his adopted grandparents, Bill and Allie Gammon; and his stepsiblings, Ana, Isabella, and Lewis Caballero, and Stephen and Peyton Mazzoni.
