BEND, OREGON — The smallest classroom. The tiniest chairs. A place meant for crayons, storytime, and the laughter of children has become the setting of an unimaginable tragedy following a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The name Rhoam Summer has been circulated in connection with reports of the shooting, but the child’s identity has not been independently confirmed in the available official reporting. The tragedy has nevertheless brought renewed attention to the lives lost and the families facing an unimaginable loss.
Details of the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting
According to the Bend Police Department, officers responded to Silver Rail Elementary School at approximately 12:59 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire near the school. Initial information indicated that someone had fired at a vehicle before entering the school and shooting inside.
At approximately 1:17 p.m., an alert urged members of the public to avoid the area as police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel responded. The school was placed under lockdown, and a reunification site was established for families.
Children and teachers among those killed
Authorities confirmed that three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and one teacher died in the shooting. The 16-year-old suspected shooter also died, bringing the reported total to five fatalities.
A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were reported critically injured and taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
According to officials, a community member who saw the suspected shooter enter the school followed him inside and fatally shot him before police arrived. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. The suspect’s identity and motive had not been publicly confirmed in the initial reports.
Investigation and community response
The shooting prompted a major response from local law enforcement and emergency services. The FBI and other agencies were also expected to assist with the investigation.
Bend-La Pine Schools canceled classes, sports, and other activities for Friday as the district and community began responding to the tragedy. Families and community members gathered to support one another while authorities worked to establish the full circumstances of the shooting.
Remembering the young lives lost
A child’s life should be filled with opportunities to learn, play, discover the world, and grow surrounded by care. The deaths of three young students and their teacher have left families and the wider Bend community grieving lives cut short by violence.
At just five years old, the child reportedly identified in some accounts as Rhoam Summer would have had many milestones and experiences still ahead. However, until authorities or the family confirm the child’s identity, that name should not be treated as an officially established identification.
The grief surrounding this tragedy extends to the families of every victim, the injured, school staff, classmates, and all those affected by the violence.
May the victims be remembered with dignity, and may their families and the Silver Rail Elementary community find support and comfort as they face this devastating loss.
