Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 1:10 p.m. on October 15 to the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E., near 80 Avenue N.E. in the Saddle Ridge community. Firefighters arrived to find several damaged vehicles, an intense fire involving a transit bus and a bus driver trapped inside another vehicle.

According to the Calgary Police Service, a northbound transit bus was approaching the intersection when it struck a truck traveling in the same direction. The truck moved into an adjacent lane, sideswiped an SUV and continued forward into a box truck.

The transit bus continued through the area, striking a sedan and pushing it through the intersection. The sedan then collided with another truck. The bus subsequently struck the rear of a second Calgary Transit bus.

Both buses continued moving for a short distance before coming to a stop. The second bus caught fire, producing thick smoke and flames that spread across its roof.

Firefighters located three deceased passengers aboard the second transit bus. Emergency Health Services Alberta reported that 19 people were injured in the incident.

Ten injured people were transported to hospitals by ambulance, including one with life-threatening injuries at the time of the initial reports. Another five people assessed at the scene were taken to hospital for further evaluation. A Calgary Transit driver suffered serious injuries after becoming trapped and had to be extricated by specialist rescue crews.

A Calgary police officer also sustained minor injuries while responding to the emergency. Investigators said she had approached the burning bus when the fire intensified and an explosion occurred.

Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, hazardous-materials specialists and Calgary Transit personnel worked together at the scene. Fire crews extinguished the flames while rescue teams freed the trapped driver and medical teams treated injured people.

Because one of the buses used compressed natural gas, hazardous-materials specialists worked with transit personnel to assess the fuel system and ensure it had been safely vented. Authorities coordinated the response through a unified command structure.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating the sequence of collisions, while Calgary Fire Department investigators are examining how the fire began. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is also conducting a death investigation.

Officials have not announced a final cause for the collision. Investigators are working to reconstruct the events and establish how the initial impact led to the subsequent crashes and fire.

The tragedy has prompted condolences from Calgary’s mayor and Alberta’s premier. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities may release further information as they establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths and injuries.
