AUSTIN, Texas — Dmario Antonie Jones, 24, died after being shot during an early-morning incident at a home in South Austin, according to the Austin Police Department.
Police said officers responded to a reported burglary at approximately 3:51 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in the 200 block of Virtus Bend. When officers arrived, they found Jones suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Jones was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:10 a.m.
According to the preliminary investigation, police believe Jones entered the residence and proceeded into a bedroom during the alleged burglary. Investigators said he was shot by the homeowner during the incident. The homeowner was interviewed by homicide detectives and was described by police as fully cooperative with the investigation. No charges had been filed against the homeowner at the time of the police department’s September 24 update.
Investigation Underway
Austin Police Department homicide detectives and forensic specialists responded to the scene to document and process evidence. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events that led to Jones being inside the residence.
Police have identified Jones as a Black male born May 9, 2002. His death is being investigated as Austin’s 43rd homicide of 2026, according to APD.
The circumstances described by police are based on a preliminary investigation, and authorities have not released additional details about what occurred inside the residence before the shooting.
