Jaffet Cuarenta, Adrielle Vazquez and Emigdio Gutierrez Remembered After Fatal Tyler Pursuit Crash
The Tyler community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jaffet Cuarenta, Adrielle Vazquez, and Emigdio Gutierrez, all 17 of Tyler, Texas, along with a 15-year-old from Smith County, whose life was also lost in a devastating crash early Sunday morning, September 27, 2026.
Four young lives filled with possibility were suddenly cut short, leaving families, friends, and loved ones facing a level of grief that words can hardly express.
According to the Tyler Police Department, the events began around 3:43 a.m. when officers responded to reports of suspicious noises and gunshots in the 1500 block of Lake Placid Road. A vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting was later located by investigators. When officers attempted to make contact, the vehicle fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit through Tyler and onto Highway 31 East.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers joined the pursuit after it moved outside Tyler. Authorities said a DPS trooper ultimately used a precision immobilization technique (PIT maneuver) to bring the high-speed pursuit to an end. The vehicle then crashed near County Road 211, east of Tyler, at approximately 5:36 a.m.
Three of the teenagers were pronounced dead at the crash scene, while the fourth was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. Tyler Police subsequently identified the victims as Jaffet Cuarenta, Adrielle Vazquez, and Emigdio Gutierrez, all 17 and from Tyler. The fourth victim was identified only as a 15-year-old from Smith County because of his age.
The tragedy has left families facing the devastating reality of losing young lives far earlier than anyone could have imagined. At 17 and 15, each of the teenagers had years of life ahead of them, with opportunities, relationships, experiences, and dreams still unfolding.

The circumstances surrounding both the shooting that preceded the pursuit and the fatal crash remain under investigation. Tyler Police Department investigators are handling the shooting investigation, while DPS accident investigators and Texas Rangers are involved in the crash investigation.
