The Chesnee community is mourning the tragic and sudden loss of 43-year-old Bruce Dean Mathis, whose life was cut short following a fatal shooting Tuesday night in Spartanburg.
Officers with the Spartanburg Police Department responded to 412 Lucerne Drive around 9:20 p.m. after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Mathis suffering from a gunshot wound to the face in the front yard of a residence. Emergency responders provided immediate aid and transported him to Spartanburg Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead at 10:04 p.m.
Investigators said the shooting followed an altercation involving Mathis and 21-year-old Joseph Brenden Poole of Greenville, who reportedly knew the victim. Authorities stated that Poole allegedly fled the scene after the incident but was later taken into custody without incident.
Poole has since been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was denied bond on Wednesday as the case moves forward through the judicial system.
Officials confirmed that a forensic examination of Mathis was conducted on May 27, with results still pending as part of the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement continues to work to piece together the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
In Chesnee, loved ones and community members are left heartbroken, struggling to come to terms with the sudden and devastating loss. Bruce Dean Mathis is being remembered with love, respect, and deep sorrow by those who knew him best.
His passing has left a profound void among family and friends, as the community comes together in grief and support during this difficult time. As Chesnee mourns, many are holding onto memories and reflecting on a life gone far too soon.
Authorities say the investigation remains active, and further updates will be released as new information becomes available.
