According to a statement released by the department, Cotton was killed on June 10 in what authorities described as an accidental ATV crash. Officials said the incident occurred while the officer was off duty. Additional details regarding the location and circumstances surrounding the crash have not yet been released as the investigation continues.

Cotton served with the Rocky Mount Police Department for seven years and was widely respected by fellow officers and community members. Before joining the department, he served in the U.S. military and Army Reserve, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to public service.

In 2023, Cotton became a member of the agency’s K-9 Unit, where he worked alongside specialized police dogs in support of law enforcement operations. Most recently, he completed training with his second K-9 partner, Leo, an explosives-detection dog. The department also recognized Cotton as its first African American K-9 handler, a milestone that reflected his dedication and leadership within the agency.

In its tribute, the department described Cotton as more than just a coworker, emphasizing the deep impact he had on those around him.

“Officer Cotton was more than a colleague; he was family,” the department said in a statement honoring his service and legacy.

The loss is made even more heartbreaking as Cotton was just days away from celebrating his 30th birthday on June 15.

Multiple agencies, including the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and Wilson County Emergency Services, are assisting with the ongoing investigation into the fatal crash.

As news of his passing spreads, fellow officers, friends, and community members continue to offer condolences and prayers for Cotton’s family, loved ones, and members of the Rocky Mount Police Department during this difficult time.
