Officials with the City of Cedar Rapids have identified the man recovered from the Cedar River as 33-year-old Dakota Freese, a Cedar Rapids native and former Minor League Baseball player whose sudden death has left the community in shock.
Freese previously played professional baseball with the Staten Island FerryHawks and the Lexington Legends, where he was recognized for his talent and dedication on the mound. Friends and former teammates are now mourning the loss of a life that once showed promise both in sports and in his hometown community.
According to authorities, the incident occurred near the Interstate 380 bridge. Witnesses told first responders that Freese had been fishing in the area when he accidentally dropped equipment into the water. In an effort to retrieve the items, he entered the river but was quickly overtaken by strong currents and pulled under.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 4:34 p.m., launching a coordinated search effort involving police, fire units, and water rescue teams. A Johnson County Metro Dive Team later joined the operation.
After several hours of searching, Freese was located at approximately 7:10 p.m., just feet from where he was last seen. Officials confirmed he was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
The heartbreaking loss has deeply affected the Cedar Rapids community, where Freese was known not only for his athletic career but also as a local son whose life ended far too soon.
Friends, family, and fans are now remembering Dakota Freese with grief and respect, honoring the impact he left behind both on and off the field.
