The Canadian rodeo community is mourning the loss of Dusty LaValley, a four-time Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) Bareback Riding Champion and Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer, who passed away on August 2, 2026, at the age of 45 following a courageous years-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Dusty’s passing has brought profound sadness to family, friends, fellow competitors, and rodeo fans across Canada and beyond. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of the country’s most accomplished bareback riders and a respected figure whose influence extended far beyond his achievements in competition.
Born on May 30, 1981, Dusty dedicated much of his life to the sport of rodeo, earning admiration for his incredible skill, determination, sportsmanship, and unwavering character. His passion for bareback riding and his commitment to excellence made him a standout competitor throughout his career.
LaValley enjoyed tremendous success on the professional rodeo circuit, competing in 13 Canadian Finals Rodeos (CFR) and capturing CPRA Bareback Riding championships in 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011. His accomplishments also reached the international stage, as he qualified twice for the prestigious National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in 2008 and 2010, competing among the world’s top bareback riders.
Beyond the arena, Dusty was remembered for the person he was away from competition. Friends, colleagues, and fans admired his humility, perseverance, and the respect he showed toward fellow athletes and the sport he loved.
After being diagnosed with ALS, Dusty faced the illness with the same courage and determination that defined his rodeo career. His journey inspired many, as he continued to demonstrate strength and resilience throughout his battle.
As the rodeo world honors Dusty LaValley’s memory, his achievements, character, and impact on the sport will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow riders, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.
