According to investigators, chaos erupted at the mosque when gunfire broke out, sending worshippers scrambling for safety as emergency crews and police rushed to the scene. Officials confirmed that three victims lost their lives in the violence, while additional individuals were treated for injuries and emotional trauma following the terrifying incident.

Among those killed was a mosque security guard who police say acted courageously during the shooting. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl praised the guard’s actions, stating that his quick response and bravery likely prevented even greater loss of life.

Authorities later discovered two teenage suspects dead inside a nearby vehicle from what investigators believe were self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Police say firearms recovered at the scene are believed to have been taken from the home of one suspect’s parents prior to the attack.

Investigators also revealed disturbing evidence pointing toward a possible hate-motivated attack. According to officials, hate speech and extremist language were allegedly found written on one of the weapons recovered, while a suicide note containing racial and anti-religious rhetoric was also discovered.

The FBI and local law enforcement agencies are assisting in the investigation as authorities work to determine the full motive behind the shooting and whether additional individuals may have had knowledge of the attack beforehand.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through San Diego’s Muslim community and beyond, with community leaders, elected officials, and advocacy groups condemning the violence and calling for stronger efforts to combat hate-fueled extremism targeting religious groups.

Vigils and prayer gatherings are expected to take place across the city as mourners honor the victims and stand in solidarity with the Islamic Center of San Diego.

The investigation remains ongoing.
