Investigators said the incident unfolded Monday when two armed teenage suspects opened fire at the center before later dying from self-inflicted gunshot wounds several blocks away. The shooting has been described by officials as a targeted attack now being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Community members and mosque leaders are remembering the victims as respected and devoted members of the Islamic Center community whose lives were deeply rooted in faith, service, and family.

Amin Abdullah, a father of eight and longtime security guard at the mosque, is being credited with quick action during the attack. Officials said he immediately alerted staff and those inside the Islamic school to initiate lockdown procedures as the shooting began. Authorities believe his actions helped protect many lives inside the facility.

The other two victims, Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, were described as longtime worshippers who were present at the center during the incident. Community members said both men attempted to divert the attackers away from the main building in an effort to protect others inside.

Officials identified the suspects as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, who were later found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds nearby. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and San Diego Police Department, continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the attack, including potential motives, online activity, and planning.

Federal investigators said they recovered writings, electronic devices, tactical gear, ammunition, and firearms during the investigation. The contents of the materials are being reviewed as part of the ongoing case.

As the investigation continues, the San Diego community is left mourning the loss of three lives described by loved ones as devoted, courageous, and deeply connected to their community.
