The Providence community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 28-year-old Joseph R. Baez, who tragically died following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 95 South in Madison, Connecticut, on May 19, 2026.
According to Connecticut State Police, the crash occurred around 1:40 p.m. between Exits 59 and 60 when Baez, who was riding a 2024 BMW M1000 motorcycle, struck the rear of a Subaru Crosstrek SUV traveling ahead of him. Emergency responders arrived quickly and performed CPR at the scene before Baez was airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities reported that the motorcycle had been traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the collision and had been observed driving erratically moments before the crash. Investigators also noted the motorcycle passed a state trooper shortly before the incident, though no pursuit was initiated.
The driver of the Subaru was not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continued.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along I-95 South as emergency crews worked for several hours to investigate and clear the roadway.
As news of his passing spread, loved ones and friends have been left devastated, remembering Joseph as a young man whose life ended far too soon in a sudden and tragic moment on the highway.
Connecticut State Police say the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
