A Port Arthur Independent School District music teacher has been identified as the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred during a custody exchange in northeast Harris County, according to authorities.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened on Tuesday in the 12700 block of Blue Timbers Court. Investigators identified the suspect as 38-year-old Gary Davis and said he is accused of shooting and killing 36-year-old Marlon Sanders.
According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the situation unfolded when Sanders and his wife arrived at the location to pick up a child for a scheduled custody exchange. Authorities said the wife had previously been in a relationship with Davis during a separation from Sanders, and the two share a child together.
Investigators reported that as Sanders stood near a vehicle in the street, Davis allegedly rushed out and opened fire, striking him. No one else was reported injured during the incident.
Harris County Precinct 3 deputies responded quickly to the scene and provided assistance before emergency personnel transported Sanders to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, homicide and crime scene investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office processed the area and began collecting evidence to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the incident.
On Tuesday afternoon, Port Arthur ISD confirmed Sanders’ identity and shared condolences on social media. The district described him as a music teacher at Adams Elementary School, as well as a coach and musician who was actively involved in school programs, including football and basketball.
Authorities said the suspect, Gary Davis, was taken into custody at the scene. He has been charged with murder and booked into the Harris County Jail as the investigation continues.
Officials have not released additional details regarding what led to the confrontation. Detectives said the case remains active as they continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence.
