The Champaign community is mourning the tragic loss of 65-year-old Steven A. Cornett, a former Chief of Police of the Tilton Police Department, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while working on a road crew along Interstate 74 early Wednesday morning.
According to the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, Cornett was struck near mile marker 180 on I-74 in Champaign County and was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m. Officials confirmed he suffered fatal blunt force injuries as a result of the crash. An autopsy has been scheduled as the investigation continues.
The sudden news has left colleagues, friends, and community members in shock, as tributes begin pouring in for a man remembered for decades of dedicated public service and leadership.
Cornett served the Tilton Police Department from 1984 until his retirement in 2017, building a long and respected career in law enforcement. Over more than three decades, he rose through the ranks from Patrolman to Lieutenant, Captain, and ultimately Chief of Police, a position he held from 2010 to 2017.
Those who worked alongside him describe Cornett as a steady, committed leader who played a major role in shaping the department and mentoring younger officers. His influence extended beyond his title, leaving a lasting impression on both colleagues and the community he served.
Captain Ryan Schull and others within the department have shared heartfelt tributes, recalling Cornett’s guidance, professionalism, and dedication to public safety. Many say his leadership helped define the department’s standards and culture for years to come.
Following his retirement, Cornett continued serving the public through his work on roadway construction projects. At the time of the crash, he was working as part of a crew involved in the Interstate 57/74 interchange reconstruction project in Champaign County.
The Illinois Department of Transportation expressed condolences to Cornett’s family, coworkers, and loved ones, while also emphasizing the dangers faced by workers in active construction zones. Officials urged drivers to remain alert, slow down, and exercise caution when traveling through work areas.
As the Illinois State Police and Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue their investigation, the focus has shifted to remembrance and support for those closest to Cornett.
