A devastating murder-suicide that unfolded across multiple locations in Muscatine on June 1, 2026, left six people dead, including the suspected gunman, according to authorities.
The Muscatine Police Department said officers initially responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on Park Avenue, where four victims were found dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators identified the suspected shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland.
Family members and community sources have identified several of the victims as McFarland’s ex-wife, Lesa McFarland, along with Ryle McFarland and Dakota Whitlow. The names of two additional victims have not yet been publicly released pending notification of their families.
Authorities said McFarland fled the scene before officers arrived. He was later located on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As investigators continued to piece together the events, two additional victims were discovered at separate locations in Muscatine, bringing the total number of fatalities to six, including McFarland. Police believe all of the victims were family members connected to the suspect and that the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout the Muscatine community. The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two district employees and two current students were among those killed. Counseling and crisis support services have been made available to students, staff, and families affected by the loss.
The Muscatine Police Department, with assistance from multiple local and state law enforcement agencies, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly shootings. Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the department’s Major Crimes Unit as the investigation remains active.
