Authorities have identified the five young victims who lost their lives in a devastating single-vehicle crash that shocked the Santa Maria community early Sunday morning.
The Santa Maria Police Department announced Tuesday that the victims were 16-year-old Isabella Star Vigil, 17-year-old Nicolas Munoz-Gautreaux, 19-year-old Jennifer Gutierrez, 16-year-old Guendi Beatrice Gamez Escalante, and 17-year-old Yusbeli Diaz Galvez. All five were occupants of a vehicle that crashed shortly before 1:40 a.m. on June 7 near the intersection of South Broadway and Miller Street.
According to investigators, the vehicle was traveling along Broadway when it left the roadway and violently collided with a traffic signal pole. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle and resulted in a massive emergency response from police, firefighters, and medical personnel.
Officials said four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A fifth victim was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The tragedy left one survivor, identified as 24-year-old Aurelio Calixtro Matias, who remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday.
While investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed and alcohol may have contributed to the deadly crash. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and that final conclusions have not yet been reached.
The loss of five young lives has sent waves of grief throughout Santa Maria. Several of the victims attended local schools, prompting school districts to make grief counselors and support services available to students, faculty, and families struggling to cope with the tragedy.
Friends, classmates, and community members have shared heartfelt tributes on social media, remembering the victims as vibrant young people whose lives were filled with promise and potential. Vigils and memorial gatherings are being planned as loved ones seek comfort and healing in the aftermath of the heartbreaking loss.
In response to the tragedy, separate GoFundMe campaigns have been established to help the families cover funeral expenses and other unforeseen costs. Community members have already begun donating and offering messages of support as the families navigate an unimaginable period of grief.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the crash to contact the Santa Maria Police Department. The community now mourns the loss of five young lives taken far too soon, while keeping the surviving victim and all affected families in their thoughts and prayers.
