Malik Collier Obituary, CHICAGO, ILL. — Authorities have identified Malik Collier, 30, as the man killed in a deadly early-morning mass shooting in Chicago’s River North neighborhood that also left another person injured as police continue investigating the violent attack.
The shooting happened shortly before 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, near the intersection of North State Street and Grand Avenue in downtown Chicago. Police said multiple armed suspects opened fire in the area, sending dozens of rounds through the busy entertainment district.
According to investigators, a matte gray Honda Accord arrived near the intersection before five masked suspects wearing hooded sweatshirts reportedly exited the vehicle and began firing weapons, including rifles and handguns, at people in the area.
Collier suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the attack. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. A 65-year-old man was also struck in the foot during the shooting and was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was reported to be in fair condition.
Authorities said the shooting created a large crime scene spanning parts of Grand Avenue and North State Street. Detectives recovered extensive ballistic evidence, including more than 70 shell casings, with investigators estimating that up to 110 rounds may have been fired during the incident.
Police later tracked the suspected getaway vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 290 before it was abandoned and found burned on Chicago’s West Side. Investigators also discovered that the Honda was using stolen license plates believed to belong to another vehicle.
Officials have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. Detectives continue reviewing surveillance footage, processing forensic evidence, and speaking with witnesses in an effort to identify the suspects involved.
Downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly said preliminary information suggests the shooting was a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence. He expressed concern about the level of gunfire in one of Chicago’s busiest areas and called for increased police presence throughout downtown, especially ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
As the investigation remains active, authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Chicago Police Department. The community continues to mourn the loss of Malik Collier as investigators work to bring those responsible to justice.
May he rest in peace.
