Jamarion Rashad Robinson, 26, was fatally shot by members of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force on August 5, 2016, during an attempted arrest at his girlfriend’s apartment in East Point, Georgia, near Atlanta. Authorities said the task force was attempting to serve arrest warrants connected to allegations including attempted arson and aggravated assault of a police officer.
The shooting became the subject of significant public controversy. Authorities said officers believed Robinson had a firearm and reported that he fired at them. Robinson’s family and their attorneys disputed aspects of the official account and questioned whether the level of force used was justified.
The case also drew attention because officers involved in the operation were not equipped with body cameras. A bystander recorded audio of the incident, which subsequently became important to legal proceedings and public scrutiny of the shooting.
In October 2021, a grand jury indicted former U.S. Marshal Eric Heinze and Clayton County officer Kristopher Hutchens in connection with Robinson’s death. The charges included felony murder, burglary, aggravated assault, and making false statements. Both officers pleaded not guilty.
The legal proceedings have continued for years. More recently, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected efforts to add additional charges against the officers, while the broader criminal and civil litigation surrounding Robinson’s death has remained unresolved.
