Detroit Liquor Store Shooting: Faith Williams, 57, Killed and Niece Critically Injured in Morningside Attack
DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit community is mourning the death of Faith Williams, 57, who was fatally shot outside a liquor store in the city’s Morningside neighborhood on Friday night, August 21, 2026. Her niece was also wounded and remains in critical condition.
The shooting happened at approximately 11:15 p.m. in the 15500 block of East Warren Avenue. According to preliminary information, Williams and her niece were entering the liquor store when a 15-year-old boy, reportedly shirtless at the time, allegedly opened fire.
The shooting was captured on surveillance video, portions of which have circulated widely on social media. Investigators are reviewing the footage as they work to establish exactly what happened before, during and immediately after the gunfire.
Williams was struck and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead following the shooting. Her niece was also hit by gunfire and was transported to a hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The teenage suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot following the shooting. Police initially warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous while they worked to locate him. He was later taken into custody.
Investigators have said the shooting appears to have been random, and authorities have not identified a known relationship between the victims and the teenager. Detectives are continuing to investigate a possible motive.
People familiar with the suspect reportedly told local media that he had been struggling following the recent death of his mother. However, investigators have not publicly confirmed that his mother’s death was connected to the shooting or established that it played a role in the alleged attack.
The case has generated significant attention after video of the shooting circulated online. Authorities are continuing to examine surveillance footage, witness statements and other evidence as they build the case.
