Calgary Officer-Involved Shooting: Woman Dies After Police Response at Legacy Circle Home
CALGARY, Alberta — Alberta’s police oversight agency is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a woman in southeast Calgary early Wednesday morning.
According to police, officers were called to a residence in the 200 block of Legacy Circle S.E. at approximately 1:20 a.m. on August 26, 2026, to conduct a welfare check involving a woman inside the home.
The situation remained at the residence for more than an hour. At approximately 2:30 a.m., police said the woman exited the home while armed with a weapon.
The encounter then escalated, prompting one officer to discharge their service firearm, striking the woman. Emergency responders attended the scene, but the woman was pronounced deceased at the location.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting, including the nature of the welfare concern and the events immediately preceding the officer’s use of force, remain under investigation.
During the police response, a gas meter was ruptured, resulting in a gas leak in the surrounding community. Officers assisted with evacuations, escorting affected residents away from the area while the Calgary Fire Department responded and worked to make the scene safe.
The cause of the gas leak has not been determined. Residents who were temporarily evacuated were later permitted to return to their homes after the area was secured.
Two officers also required medical attention following the incident. One officer was transported to a hospital as a precaution, while another was assessed by paramedics at the scene. Police said both officers are recovering.
Because the incident involved police use of a firearm and resulted in a death, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation in accordance with provincial protocol.
ASIRT will examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the actions of the officers and the events leading to the woman’s death. The investigation is expected to include interviews with witnesses and examination of physical and other available evidence.
Police have not released the identity of the deceased woman or additional details about the weapon involved.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact police.
The investigation remains ongoing, and ASIRT is expected to provide further information when it is appropriate to do so.
