Dean Battaglino Obituary, SEYMOUR, Conn. — Dean Battaglino, 33, of New Haven, was killed in a fatal shooting at Ideal Plaza in Seymour early Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026. Police are investigating his death as a homicide after officers found him in the parking lot at 172 North Street.
Seymour police said officers received a 911 call at approximately 1:15 a.m. reporting that a man was dead in the Ideal Plaza parking lot. When officers arrived, they found Battaglino suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have identified Battaglino as a 33-year-old New Haven resident. Friends and acquaintances who shared tributes on social media described him as an Ansonia resident, although police have not publicly confirmed that additional residency information. Social media posts also indicated that Battaglino was a father to a daughter.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation as detectives worked to determine what happened. Seymour Police Chief John Bucherati said investigators were following several leads and conducting interviews, while also working to obtain search warrants connected to the case.
“We are following up on several leads. We are conducting interviews at this time, and the investigation is less than twelve hours old,” Bucherati said Wednesday morning. Police had not released information about a possible suspect, a motive, or whether anyone had been taken into custody.
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner scheduled an autopsy for August 27 as investigators continued working to establish the circumstances and exact cause and manner of Battaglino’s death. Detectives from the Seymour Police Department were joined by members of the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad and inspectors from the Milford State’s Attorney’s Office.
Investigators remained at Ideal Plaza Wednesday morning collecting evidence, conducting interviews and working to reconstruct the events leading to the shooting. Police also contacted nearby businesses and are expected to review available surveillance footage as they work to establish a timeline. Several businesses at the plaza remained closed while detectives processed the scene.
Friends and acquaintances expressed condolences on social media following news of Battaglino’s death. His death has left those who knew him mourning as investigators continue working to establish what led to the fatal shooting.
