KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An emergency alert issued by the University of Tennessee on Friday morning prompted a campus-wide lockdown after authorities responded to a violent stabbing near World’s Fair Park in Knoxville.
The university initially warned students, faculty and staff of an “active threat” on or near campus and instructed people to immediately seek shelter. The alert urged anyone inside a building to lock and barricade doors, stay away from windows, silence cellphones and remain in a secure location.
The warning sparked concern across the University of Tennessee community because of the initial wording of the emergency notification, which described an individual as attacking people on or near campus. However, authorities later clarified that the underlying incident was a stabbing at World’s Fair Park and did not involve students or university property.
Stabbing reported at World’s Fair Park
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers were investigating a stabbing involving two people believed to be unhoused. The victim suffered injuries that police described as suspected to be non-life-threatening.
The suspect reportedly fled the immediate area following the stabbing. Authorities believed the person was traveling west in the direction of the University of Tennessee campus, prompting police and university officials to issue the emergency warning.
UT Police initially described the suspect as a Black male wearing black pants and white shoes. Police urged members of the campus community to remain alert and follow instructions from law enforcement.
Why students received an active threat warning
Although the incident occurred away from university property, officials treated the situation seriously because of the suspect’s reported movement toward campus.
The University of Tennessee’s emergency alert system is designed to notify the campus community when authorities believe there is an ongoing emergency or dangerous situation that could pose an immediate threat.
The university’s initial instructions followed standard emergency procedures, telling people to Run, Hide and Fight if confronted with an immediate threat.
Students who were outdoors were instructed to move to the nearest safe location, while those inside buildings were told to lock and barricade doors and remain away from entrances and windows.
No students or campus property involved
Authorities emphasized that the stabbing itself did not involve University of Tennessee students or campus property.
The incident occurred at World’s Fair Park, an area close enough to campus that police were concerned about the suspect’s possible movement toward the university.
Multiple law-enforcement agencies responded as officers worked to locate the suspect and determine whether the individual posed a continuing threat to the university community.
Campus lockdown lifted
As the police response developed, the threat to the university campus was subsequently canceled, allowing the campus lockdown and barricade instructions to be lifted.
The incident nevertheless caused significant alarm among students and staff who received the emergency notification, particularly because the first alert did not immediately explain that the incident involved a stabbing rather than a shooting.
The university has encouraged members of the campus community to rely on official emergency notifications and law-enforcement updates during rapidly developing incidents.
Investigation continues
Knoxville police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, including what led to the confrontation and where the suspect went after leaving World’s Fair Park.
The victim’s injuries were not considered life-threatening at the time of the initial police update. Authorities have not indicated that the incident was connected to the university or that students were specifically targeted.
The incident remains under investigation, and additional information about the suspect, possible charges and the circumstances leading to the stabbing may be released as authorities continue their work.
