Minneapolis Shooting Today: Man Killed in Early Morning Vehicle Shooting on 18th Avenue South
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating a deadly early-morning shooting that claimed the life of a man Friday, August 28, 2026.
Police said officers were called to the 2400 block of 18th Avenue South at approximately 3:20 a.m. after a ShotSpotter activation and multiple 911 reports alerted authorities to possible gunfire in the area.
When officers arrived, they discovered a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Officers immediately began providing lifesaving medical assistance while emergency personnel responded. Despite those efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police secure shooting scene
Following the discovery of the victim, officers secured the area and began canvassing the surrounding neighborhood for witnesses, surveillance footage and other information that could help investigators determine what happened.
The Minneapolis Police Department’s Forensic Scientists also responded to process the crime scene. Investigators collected physical evidence that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify potential leads.
The vehicle in which the victim was found is expected to be an important part of the investigation as detectives work to determine whether the shooting occurred inside the vehicle, nearby or at another location before the victim was discovered.

MPD homicide investigators are now working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the man’s death.
At this stage, authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity, age or additional information about what may have preceded the shooting. Police also have not announced an arrest or identified a suspect.
Investigators are expected to review evidence recovered from the scene, speak with witnesses and examine any available surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting—including a possible motive and whether the victim knew the person responsible—remain under investigation.
