Jonathan “Jon” Michael Rock, a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend, died September 7, 2026, at the age of 36, leaving behind a family and community mourning the loss of a man remembered for his determination, adventurous spirit and deep commitment to the people he loved.
Jon was born November 18, 1989, in Warren, Michigan, to John and Maureen Rock. From an early age, he developed a strong connection to his family, his community and the history of his country. Childhood memories included riding bikes, playing sports, swimming, spending time outdoors and sharing everyday adventures with his twin sister, Jen.
His interest in American history and the military developed while he was young and eventually became an important part of the path he chose in adulthood. Jon graduated from Eisenhower High School in 2008, where he established himself as an exceptional distance runner and a dedicated student.
His accomplishments in cross country and track reflected the work ethic that would continue to define his life. He became a school record holder and recorded a third-place finish at the 2007 Division I MHSAA State Meet. He was also named Academic-Athlete of the Class of 2008 and served as team captain and team MVP.
Those accomplishments helped lead him to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he continued both his athletic and military careers. During his time at the academy, Jon earned recognition for his military performance and leadership, including the title of Honor Basic and a Commandant’s Pin. He also became a member of the “500 Club” and earned Mountain West All-Conference honors as a runner.
After his time in the Air Force, Jon eventually made his home in California, where his life took another important turn when he met Lara in 2017. Their relationship quickly developed into a lasting partnership, with their second date reportedly including a skydiving adventure—a fitting reflection of Jon’s adventurous personality.
The couple married in February 2020 in Hawaii in a ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Their family grew with the arrival of their daughters, Leila and Luna, and becoming a husband and father became one of the most meaningful parts of Jon’s life.
Jon and his family later moved to a ranch near the Sierra Nevada, where he embraced a quieter life surrounded by the outdoors. He could often be found wearing a Stetson and enjoying the surroundings of the ranch, while continuing to pursue his professional and creative interests.
Throughout his career, Jon worked in a variety of fields, including the armed forces, housing, real estate, social work, financial services, business intelligence and the mortgage industry. His experiences across those fields contributed to his interest in writing and eventually led him to become an author.
While living at the ranch, Jon completed and published two books. One of his proudest accomplishments was Death by Socialism, a work that reflected years of research and writing and represented a major personal achievement for him.
Yet despite his professional accomplishments, the people closest to Jon considered his role as a husband and father to be his greatest achievement.
His wife and daughters were at the center of his life, and those who knew him say nothing compared with the importance he placed on his family. The memories they created together—from their wedding in Hawaii to life on their ranch—will now become part of the legacy he leaves behind.
Jon’s death has brought profound sadness to his family and friends, particularly because of the many roles he filled during his relatively short life. He was an athlete, military man, writer, husband and father, but above all he was someone who invested himself deeply in the people and causes that mattered to him.
His story also reflects a life marked by ambition and discipline. From competitive running in high school to the demands of the Air Force Academy and military service, Jon consistently challenged himself to accomplish more.
Friends and loved ones will remember the energy and determination he brought to those pursuits, as well as the adventurous personality that could turn an ordinary moment into an experience.
For Lara and their daughters, however, the loss is deeply personal. The husband and father who built a life with them on their California ranch is now remembered through the family, memories and values he leaves behind.
Jon Rock’s life ended at 36, but his accomplishments and relationships leave a lasting legacy. His years included athletic achievement, military service, professional experiences, writing and, most importantly, the creation of a family he loved deeply.
