Phil Tregurtha Obituary, Penguin, Tasmania, Ben Lomond Ski Patrol Dedicated Member Has Passed Away
The Ben Lomond Ski Patrol is deeply saddened to share the news of Phil Tregurtha’s passing. Phil was a cherished member of our mountain community whose generosity and passion for Ben Lomond touched so many lives over the years. His absence on the mountain will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Phil passed away on Saturday, 12 September 2026, while volunteering with the Tasmanian Canoe Club—a testament to his lifelong commitment to service and the outdoors.
A man of immense character, Phil was someone who was always willing to help others, donating his skills, time, and tools to numerous community organisations throughout his life, both during his professional teaching career and in his well-earned retirement. Known affectionately as “Phil the Fixer,” he was a true jack-of-all-trades with a remarkable, almost magical ability to repair almost any broken thing that presented itself to him. Men like Phil are few and far between.
His impact extended far beyond his technical skills. As a family, we were constantly reminded of just how special Phil was whenever we bumped into his former students from a 40-year teaching career, people whose dogs he helped train, or those he introduced to the joys of kayaking on the Forth River, skiing at Ben Lomond, and water-skiing at Lake Barrington. These are only a few of the countless ways he enriched the lives of everyone around him.
There is rarely a week that goes by without someone recognising our surname, ‘Tregurtha,’ asking if we are related to Phil, and sharing a story of how he made a positive and lasting memory in their life.
Phil is survived by his wife, Lindy, and children, Callum and Gabriella. We are incredibly grateful to those who provided support to Phil when he sadly paddled off into the sunset.
A celebration of Phil’s life will likely be held on Friday, 25 September 2026, in Ulverstone; finer details are to be confirmed. Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with Lindy, Callum, and Gaby during this difficult time.
