Heartbreaking Information Unfolds: Brother and Sister Dead in Pennsauken Murder-Suicide
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — A quiet New Jersey neighborhood was shaken Wednesday morning after a deadly shooting left a brother and sister dead in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide.
The incident happened on September 16, 2026, in the 4400 block of Bethel Avenue, where Pennsauken police responded to a report of gunfire and a man reportedly armed with a handgun inside a residence.
When officers arrived at approximately 9:01 a.m., they discovered 59-year-old Janet Camacho, of Pennsauken, suffering from a gunshot wound on the front steps of the home.
Camacho was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to save her life. She was pronounced dead at approximately 9:38 a.m.
Police Establish Perimeter Around Home
Because authorities believed an armed person could still be inside the residence, police established a perimeter around the property and moved nearby residents away from the area as a precaution.
The response involved multiple law enforcement agencies and specialized personnel. The Camden County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team was brought in to assist with clearing the property.
Authorities also used a robotic dog during the operation to help search the residence and reduce the potential danger to responding officers.
The police operation continued for roughly an hour and a half after the initial emergency call.
At approximately 10:37 a.m., officers located 60-year-old Daniel Lopez, also of Pennsauken, inside the residence.
Lopez was found suffering from what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at approximately 10:41 a.m.
Victims Identified as Brother and Sister
Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Pennsauken Police Chief Phil Olivo confirmed that Lopez and Camacho were brother and sister.
Investigators are treating the deaths as a murder-suicide, according to authorities.
The investigation is still in its early stages, and officials have not publicly disclosed what led to the shooting or what may have happened inside or outside the home before the fatal gunfire.
A motive has not been released.
Surveillance Video Captured Incident
The investigation also includes surveillance footage that reportedly captured portions of the incident.
According to WPVI, video showed the shooting and later captured a man pacing outside the residence. The footage was reportedly considered too graphic to broadcast.
Investigators are expected to review available surveillance recordings and other evidence as they reconstruct the timeline and circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Neighbor Remembers Lopez
For people living in the neighborhood, the deaths have been especially difficult to process.
Neighbor Michelle Jimenez told WPVI that Lopez had been a close family friend who regularly attended gatherings with her family and was known for baking for them.
Jimenez described the news as shocking, highlighting how difficult it can be for neighbors to reconcile a violent incident with the person they knew in everyday life.
The tragedy has left the community mourning two lives lost within the same residence and raised questions about what circumstances preceded the violence.

Although authorities have classified the case as a murder-suicide, detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Investigators are working to establish a complete timeline, examine the available evidence and determine what events preceded the shooting.
