PASO ROBLES, Calif. — An officer-involved shooting in Paso Robles on Thursday, September 17, 2026, ended with a male suspect dead after a vehicle pursuit, a crash and a confrontation with law enforcement along Highway 101, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began when Sheriff’s deputies attempted to contact a man who was wanted in connection with a felony stalking case.
Pursuit Begins in Paso Robles
Deputies initially located the suspect inside his vehicle in a parking lot in Paso Robles and attempted to make contact with him.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the situation quickly escalated when the suspect accelerated his vehicle and struck a Sheriff’s patrol unit.
The suspect then fled the area, prompting deputies to begin a vehicle pursuit.
The pursuit continued northbound on Highway 101. During the chase, the suspect eventually turned around near Mission Street in San Miguel and began traveling southbound.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle using spike strips several times, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
Pursuit Terminated Over Safety Concerns
As the suspect approached Paso Robles, Sheriff’s deputies made the decision to terminate the active pursuit because of concerns for public safety.
Deputies subsequently lost sight of the suspect vehicle.
The termination of the pursuit, however, did not end the incident.
Authorities later learned that the suspect had crashed his vehicle while traveling on Highway 101. The vehicle eventually came to a stop along the side of the highway near the Niblick Road overpass in Paso Robles.
Crisis Negotiator Attempts Contact
Deputies responded to the crash location and attempted to communicate with the suspect, who remained inside his vehicle.
A member of the Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team also responded and attempted to establish communication with him.
Despite those efforts, the suspect remained inside the vehicle.
The circumstances then escalated when the suspect eventually exited the vehicle.
Suspect Points Handgun at Officers
According to the Sheriff’s Office, after exiting the vehicle, the suspect pointed a handgun at Sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Paso Robles Police Department.
Officers and deputies responded by firing their weapons.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three Paso Robles police officers and two Sheriff’s deputies were directly involved in the shooting.
Authorities said no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Multiple Investigations Underway
The shooting will now be subject to multiple investigations as authorities work to reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal confrontation.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Professional Standards Unit will conduct separate investigations into the incident.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will also conduct a concurrent investigation.
Investigators are expected to examine the initial attempted traffic stop, the patrol vehicle collision, the pursuit, the decision to terminate the pursuit, the subsequent crash and the final confrontation that resulted in the suspect’s death.
Evidence from the scene will also be reviewed as investigators establish a detailed timeline.
No Threat to Public
Authorities said there is no current threat to the public in connection with the incident.
Although the suspect has died, the investigation remains active, and officials have not released additional information about his identity or the underlying felony stalking case.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information as the various investigations progress.
The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation, and no further details concerning the circumstances leading to the suspect’s actions have been released at this time.
