EDMONTON, ALBERTA—With heavy hearts, the Edmonton community and the legal profession are mourning the passing of the Honourable Ritu Khullar, Alberta’s Chief Justice and Chief Justice of the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories.
Khullar passed away on September 3, 2026, surrounded by her family. Her death has brought deep sadness to colleagues, members of the judiciary, and many who respected her years of dedicated service to the justice system.
Born into a life of determination and public service, Ritu Khullar, 62, built a distinguished legal career before joining the judiciary. After more than two decades in private legal practice, she was appointed to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in 2017 and later joined the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories in 2018.
In November 2022, Khullar became Chief Justice of Alberta, taking on leadership of the province’s appellate courts and becoming a prominent figure in Canada’s legal community.
Throughout her career, she was recognized for her commitment to justice, leadership, and service. Her work left a lasting influence on the courts, the legal profession, and the many people who worked alongside her.
Her passing leaves family, friends, colleagues, and the broader legal community grieving the loss of a respected jurist and dedicated public servant.
