Kansas City Unsolved Homicide: Who Killed Michael C. Day?
KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Nearly a decade after 31-year-old Michael C. Day was fatally shot in Kansas City, his homicide remains unsolved, leaving investigators and those who knew him still searching for answers.
Day was killed on February 10, 2017, after Kansas City police officers responded to the 4000 block of South Benton Avenue shortly after 9:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found Day suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment, but his injuries proved fatal.
Altercation Reported Before Shooting
Investigators determined that Day had been involved in an altercation with another person shortly before the shooting.
That information became an important part of the investigation as detectives worked to determine what happened in the moments leading up to the gunfire and who was responsible for Day’s death.
Despite investigative efforts, no person has been publicly identified as responsible for the killing in the information available for this case.
Nearly 10 Years Without an Arrest
The passage of time has made the case a long-running unsolved homicide.
For Day’s family, friends and others who knew him, the lack of an arrest means that important questions surrounding his death remain unanswered. Investigators still need information that could help establish exactly what happened that night, identify the person responsible and determine what led to the shooting.
The Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit investigates reported homicides and continues working on unsolved cases until suspects are identified and cases can be presented to prosecutors.
Police Continue to Seek Information
Even years after a homicide occurs, investigators can receive information that helps move a cold case forward. A witness who was initially reluctant to speak, someone who remembers seeing or hearing something unusual, or information that was previously overlooked could potentially help detectives reconstruct the events surrounding Day’s death.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed.
Anonymous tips can be submitted through the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Information can also be submitted through Kansas City Crime Stoppers or the P3Tips application. Kansas City Crime Stoppers says anonymous information that leads to an arrest may qualify for a cash reward.
