Leon Day Park Shooting: Court Documents Detail Gunfire That Killed 12-Year-Old Khloe Ishway
PHILADELPHIA — Newly detailed court documents are providing a clearer picture of the October 3 shooting at Leon Day Park, where a 12-year-old girl was killed and several other people were wounded.
Tyree Reynolds, 23, is facing multiple criminal charges, including murder and attempted murder, in connection with the shooting on North Franklintown Road.
According to the charging documents, surveillance video captured the moments leading up to the gunfire and allegedly shows Reynolds opening fire in the direction of a football field where people were gathered.
Surveillance Video Captures Confrontation
Investigators say surveillance footage showed Reynolds in a parking area near the football field when two men approached him.
The court documents describe what appeared to be a verbal exchange between Reynolds and the two men.
Police allege the confrontation escalated when Reynolds removed a firearm from a backpack and began firing.
One of the men who had approached Reynolds reportedly returned fire, and investigators say Reynolds was struck in the ankle during the exchange.
Authorities also allege that the second man fired his weapon in a direction away from the football field.
According to investigators, however, surveillance footage captured Reynolds firing toward the football field and the area where several people were present.
12-Year-Old Khloe Ishway Killed
Among those struck by gunfire was 12-year-old Khloe Ishway.
Khloe was transported to a hospital following the shooting, but she later died from her injuries.
Her death transformed what had already been a violent incident into a fatal shooting investigation involving the death of a child.
Authorities have been working to determine the precise circumstances of the shooting, including the sequence of gunfire and the actions of each person involved.
Four People Wounded
In addition to Khloe, four other people were wounded, according to the information contained in the court documents. Reynolds was among those injured.
The documents describe injuries suffered by three other surviving victims, including gunshot wounds to the face, calf and lower back.
Those victims survived and were reported to be in stable condition.
The injuries demonstrate the danger created when gunfire erupted near an area where people were gathered, particularly around a football field and park setting.
Reynolds Faces Serious Charges
Reynolds is now facing multiple charges stemming from the incident, including allegations connected to Khloe’s death and the shooting of other victims.
The case is expected to rely heavily on surveillance footage, witness accounts, ballistic evidence and other investigative findings as prosecutors seek to establish what happened during the confrontation.
The charging documents provide investigators’ account of the shooting, but allegations contained in criminal filings are not themselves proof of guilt. Reynolds is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until he is convicted in court.
Previous Conviction Raises Additional Questions
The case has also drawn attention to Reynolds’ previous criminal history.
Court records show that Reynolds previously pleaded guilty in July 2022 to first-degree assault and using a firearm during a felony or violent crime.
He received a 15-year sentence, with all but five years suspended.
Court records list September 27, 2021, as the start date of that sentence.
Information about his exact release date was not immediately available in the records described in the case.
His previous conviction involving a firearm is likely to receive additional scrutiny as authorities and the courts consider the circumstances of the Leon Day Park shooting.
Investigation Continues
The October 3 shooting has left Khloe’s family mourning the loss of a 12-year-old girl while investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence.
The surveillance footage is expected to be an important piece of evidence as prosecutors build their case and attempt to establish who fired each shot and why the confrontation escalated.
Authorities will also have to examine the actions of the other individuals involved, including the person investigators say returned fire and the person who allegedly fired away from the football field.
As the criminal proceedings move forward, additional evidence could provide more information about what led to the confrontation and how the shooting unfolded.
For Khloe’s family, however, the legal proceedings cannot change the central fact of the tragedy: a 12-year-old girl lost her life after gunfire erupted near a Philadelphia football field.
