CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Police have revised the number of victims following an overnight shooting near the Virginia State University dormitories early Saturday morning.
Chesterfield County Police said officers were dispatched at approximately 1:28 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2026, to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street after receiving reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside the university’s dormitory area.
All five victims were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Police initially described one victim’s injuries as life-threatening, but officials later said that person’s condition had improved to critical. The other four victims were reported to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A substantial law enforcement presence remained on and around the campus as investigators secured and processed the shooting scene. Detectives are working to establish what led to the gunfire, identify those responsible and determine whether the victims were targeted or were caught in the shooting.
The investigation involves multiple law enforcement agencies. Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting Chesterfield County investigators.
Authorities have not publicly announced an arrest or released information about a possible suspect. Investigators are expected to review physical evidence and any available surveillance footage while speaking with witnesses who may have information about the shooting.
The incident has prompted an increased police presence in the area while the investigation continues. Officials have urged members of the university community and nearby residents to remain alert and provide investigators with any information that could help establish a timeline of events.
