Terry Pletch Racer Death, Indiana Sprint Week 1999 winner dies at 79, USAC Racing mourns
USAC Racing shared the news of Pletch’s passing, remembering him as a dedicated racer whose career spanned more than two decades and whose achievements remain part of the organization’s history.
A native of Frankfort, Indiana, Pletch made 98 national starts during his USAC career, competing from 1982 through 2006. Much of his racing journey was centered around his own Pletch Pools No. 29 car, where he became known for his competitiveness, perseverance, and love for the sport.
Among his many accomplishments, one moment stands above the rest — his unforgettable victory during Indiana Sprint Week at the Terre Haute Action Track in 1999.
That night, Pletch delivered one of the most remarkable performances in USAC history. Starting from 21st position, he charged through the field to claim the win, overcoming incredible odds and even finishing the race with a flat right front tire.
The victory became legendary not only because of the dramatic comeback but also because of Pletch’s confidence before the race. During an ESPN2 broadcast earlier that evening, he predicted his chances from the back of the field, saying, “I can win it from the tail, good lord willing.”
He proved those words true, turning a bold prediction into one of the defining moments of his racing career. The victory marked his only USAC national win, but it was a triumph that fans and fellow racers would remember for years.
