Taos County is mourning the loss of Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, who died Friday night after a tragic motorcycle crash during a search for a reckless driver, according to New Mexico State Police.
Officials said the incident happened around 10:25 p.m. on May 22 along State Road 518, as Taos County Sheriff’s Office deputies were actively searching for a reckless driver in the area.
According to investigators, a deputy driving a marked pickup truck began making a left turn into a dirt driveway when Sergeant Apodaca, who was riding a department-issued police motorcycle, collided with the driver’s side of the truck.
Apodaca sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced deceased at 11:44 p.m. Friday by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
News of his death was confirmed Saturday morning by Taos County leaders, sparking an outpouring of grief across the community and law enforcement agencies.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, who dedicated his life to serving and protecting the people of Taos County,” said New Mexico State Police Chief Matthew Broom.
Taos County Commission Chair Miguel Romero also shared condolences, calling Apodaca’s death a profound loss and extending support to his family, colleagues, and loved ones. He described Apodaca as a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Sheriff Steve Miera remembered Apodaca as a respected leader who served with humility and professionalism throughout his career. He noted that Apodaca earned the respect of his fellow deputies through his actions and unwavering commitment to the community.
Apodaca began his service with Taos County in 2014 at the Adult Detention Center before joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2018, where he rose to the rank of sergeant.
New Mexico State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
