The Judsonia, Arkansas community is mourning the heartbreaking and devastating loss of 31-year-old Matthew Garrett following an officer-involved shooting near Pinnacle Mountain State Park on Monday, May 25.
According to Arkansas State Police, first responders were dispatched to a home in the 22000 block of State Highway 300 in Roland after reports of a possible medical emergency. When emergency personnel arrived, they discovered an injured man suffering from a large laceration to his head.
While first responders were providing treatment, authorities said they encountered Matthew Garrett nearby holding a large machete. Emergency crews requested law enforcement assistance due to the dangerous situation unfolding at the scene.
Because of the rural location and its proximity to Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Arkansas State Park rangers responded to assist. Investigators stated that Garrett allegedly advanced toward the responding rangers while armed with the machete.
Authorities said the rangers discharged their weapons, striking Garrett. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the injured man found at the residence was transported to UAMS for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Following the shooting, Garrett’s body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the incident. Special agents will submit a case file to the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which will review whether the use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas law.
