Two people were found dead inside an apartment in northwest Columbus on Wednesday evening, in an incident that authorities are investigating as a domestic violence-related murder-suicide.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 7:30 p.m. on June 11, 2026, at an apartment complex near Applebaugh Street in the Hilliard area. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered two individuals inside the residence who were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later identified the deceased as 30-year-old Ashley Messner and 39-year-old Shaun Stevens. Police believe Stevens shot Messner before taking his own life immediately afterward.
Authorities have stated that the incident is being treated as a domestic violence-related case. At the time of reporting, no additional suspects are being sought, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to review evidence and interview potential witnesses.
Neighbors in the apartment complex described the area as quiet and said they were shocked by the incident. Some residents reported seeing the couple around the property prior to the tragedy and noted that there were no obvious public signs of conflict.
Community advocates responding to the case have reiterated concerns about the broader pattern of domestic violence-related homicides in the region, emphasizing the importance of early warning signs and access to support services for individuals in unsafe relationships.
Police have not released additional details regarding a possible motive. Officials are expected to provide further updates as the investigation develops and as next-of-kin notifications are fully completed.
As the community processes the news, friends and family members of both individuals are left mourning their loss and seeking answers in the aftermath of the incident.
Authorities continue to encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence or in need of support to contact local crisis services or law enforcement agencies.
