Massachusetts is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty following a wrong-way crash on Route 1 early Wednesday morning, May 6, 2026.
Authorities said the fatal incident occurred around 2 a.m. in Lynnfield, when Trooper Trainor responded to reports of a wrong-way driver traveling on the highway. While assisting with the emergency call, his cruiser was struck by a Jeep driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1.
Trooper Trainor was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Jeep was also pronounced dead at the scene.
State officials confirmed that Trainor had been wrapping up his shift when he immediately responded to the call for assistance. Massachusetts State Police leaders said his actions reflected his commitment to protecting the public, even at great personal risk.
Col. Geoffrey Noble described Trainor as a dedicated and selfless trooper who “epitomized what it means to be a public servant,” adding, “He was the guy you wanted as your backup.”
Governor Maura Healey said she is “heartbroken” over his death, noting that Trooper Trainor’s quick response likely prevented further loss of life. He is being remembered as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Trooper Trainor graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 2023 after previously serving as a corrections officer. He leaves behind his fiancée Jessica, his mother Barbara, and several siblings.
Route 1 northbound was closed for several hours near Walnut Street in Saugus as investigators with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office processed the scene. The highway later reopened after the on-scene investigation concluded.
As Massachusetts continues to grieve, Trooper Kevin Trainor is being honored for his bravery, service, and sacrifice. His legacy will be remembered as one of courage, duty, and unwavering commitment to protecting others.
