The community of Ottumwa, Iowa, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Ashlin Knuth, a recent graduate of the Ottumwa High School Class of 2026, who was killed following a two-vehicle crash on Sunday night at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Roemer Avenue.
According to the Ottumwa Police Department, the collision occurred around 9:15 p.m. when two vehicles entered the intersection from different directions. Investigators reported that Knuth was traveling west on Roemer Avenue while a pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Nathaniel Hart, also of Ottumwa, was traveling north on Highway 34. For reasons still under investigation, the pickup truck struck Knuth’s vehicle on the driver’s side, resulting in a severe impact that left multiple occupants trapped inside.
Emergency responders from Ottumwa Fire and ORMICS arrived quickly at the scene and worked to extricate Knuth and her 18-year-old male passenger from the wreckage. Both were transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for emergency medical treatment. Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, Ashlin Knuth later succumbed to her injuries. The condition of the passenger has not yet been released. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue working to determine the factors that led to the crash, including whether speed, visibility, or other circumstances played a role.
