An outpouring of community support has helped raise nearly $39,000 for the family of a 16-year-old girl who lost her life in a devastating crash on Oahu’s Pali Highway.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched following the death of Kalena Abelmann, who was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Thursday, June 18, in Windward Oahu. As of Saturday, the fundraiser had collected $38,661 toward its $40,000 goal, reflecting the widespread grief and support from friends, relatives, and community members.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, Abelmann was driving in the Kailua-bound lanes of the Pali Highway when she lost control of her vehicle. Investigators said the vehicle struck a concrete barrier before becoming airborne and plunging approximately 50 feet into a ravine. The vehicle then collided with an embankment and caught fire.
Authorities reported that Abelmann was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that excessive speed may have contributed to the accident. Police also stated that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The fundraiser, titled “Support for the Abelmann Ohana After Tragic Loss,” was created to assist the family with funeral and memorial expenses while helping to ease the unexpected financial challenges resulting from the tragedy. The campaign notes that donations will support Kalena’s parents, Rick and Alicia Abelmann, as well as her siblings, Kai and Kekoa.
Organizers described Kalena as a courageous, creative, and adventurous young woman who touched many lives through her kindness and generosity. They noted that she found great joy in serving others, including volunteering at a nearby food bank.
Supporters continue to share messages of condolence and encouragement, with organizers urging the public to donate if able, share the fundraiser, and keep the Abelmann family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
The crash remains under investigation.
