Detroit Liquor Store Shooting: 57-Year-Old Woman Killed, Niece Critically Injured as Teen Suspect Taken Into Custody
DETROIT, Mich. — A 57-year-old woman was killed and her niece was critically injured after a teenage boy allegedly opened fire outside a liquor store in Detroit’s Morningside neighborhood, according to preliminary information from investigators.
The shooting happened at approximately 11:15 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2026, in the 15500 block of East Warren Avenue.
The woman, identified as Faith Williams, had reportedly entered the liquor store with her niece shortly before the shooting. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to the gunfire.
According to the information released so far, surveillance video reportedly captured a 15-year-old boy leaving the business. Investigators allege that the teenager then pulled out a firearm and opened fire in the direction of the two women.
Williams was struck by gunfire and suffered fatal injuries. Despite emergency efforts, she died as a result of the shooting.
Her niece was also wounded and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. She remained in critical condition as investigators continued working the case.
Police believe the suspect left the area on foot following the shooting. Witnesses reportedly described the teenager as carrying what appeared to be an obituary for his mother. Authorities, however, have not confirmed that the obituary had any connection to the shooting or established why he may have had it in his possession.
Investigators have also not identified a known relationship between Williams, her niece and the teenage suspect. Detectives are therefore examining the possibility that the women may have been randomly targeted, although no definitive motive has been established.
The teenage suspect was later located and taken into custody. Because he is 15 years old, authorities have not publicly released his identity.
Detectives are continuing to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses and examine physical evidence as they attempt to determine exactly what led to the shooting and whether additional people were involved.
The Detroit Police Department is offering a $5,000 reward for information that helps advance the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department’s Homicide Unit at 313-596-5260.
Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or DetroitRewards.TV. Tipsters should reference case No. 2608210409 when providing information.
The shooting has left the victims’ family and the surrounding community grieving as investigators work to establish a clear motive and complete timeline of the events.
The investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as authorities continue reviewing the evidence.
