Kansas City, Kansas Officer-Involved Shooting: Armed Individual Killed on Ohio Avenue
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, August 23, 2026, in the 500 block of Ohio Avenue.
According to police, officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 12:47 a.m. following a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they made contact with an armed individual, and an encounter followed that resulted in a fatal officer-involved shooting.
The individual was killed in the shooting. No police officers were injured during the incident.
Because the shooting involved law enforcement officers, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) was immediately notified and will take responsibility for investigating the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force.
Investigators are expected to examine evidence from the scene, interview witnesses and determine the events that led to the confrontation between officers and the armed individual. The investigation will also seek to establish what occurred between the initial shots-fired call and the fatal shooting.
Police have not released additional details about the identity of the deceased individual, the weapon reportedly involved or whether any shots were fired by the individual before officers used deadly force.
Authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released by the KBI as the investigation progresses.
